The Side Hustle

It started as two tired adults trying to get through a Tuesday. Tom had a full-time tech job with the hours you'd expect. I was running Supafrank, building brands for other people while trying to hold my own life together. In the middle of it was a baby who, without much warning, became a toddler — a small person who somehow generated an entire second job's worth of logistics: what's for dinner, what's run out, what's half-used in the fridge, what someone was meant to remember to buy on Tuesday.

None of it was hard, exactly, most of it was pretty joyful, but the demand was constant, and it was almost always sitting in one person's head at a time. The actual problem was never "we need a shopping app." It was "we need to stop carrying this alone" — and, underneath that, a wish to get back some headspace, and some of the joy of food, that the logistics had quietly swallowed.

Why I Wanted In

Tom is someone I trust to do anything he sets his mind to, properly and with full integrity. So when he said he wanted to build an app, I couldn't not get involved. He wasn't chasing a business idea. He was trying to fix something real in our own lives.

Built in the Gaps, Not a Boardroom

There was no funding round, no product team, no six-month roadmap. There were evenings after the baby was down, Tom working through the architecture the way he'd approach any system at work — properly, with the discipline of someone who thinks in structures and edge cases, not shortcuts. My time came in whatever pockets I could find around Supafrank and family life, but that's where the app got its character: the tone, the small human touches, the sense that this was built by people who actually live the problem, not a team guessing at it from a spec sheet.

Two Disciplines, One Kitchen Table

Both of us have spent years doing this properly for other people — Tom in systems, me in brand and design. Nimblist became the place we asked an honest question of our own: could two experienced people, working with AI rather than against it, actually build something that made a real difference?
